The Metaverse is already one of the hottest trends of 2022!! And as KRG recruit within the Tech space, its only right we break down what the metaverse actually means…

The Metaverse can be loosely defined as: a virtual-reality space where users can interact with a computer-generated environment and other users, which encourages interactive and immersive experiences.  Similarly to how the internet lets us access different websites, the Metaverse will allows us to access different 3D virtual worlds through AR and VR.

However, talking about the Metaverse now, was once like discussing the internet decades ago– no one is 100% sure what it can be defined as or what it could become…

The main aim of the Metaverse is to connect with others in a new way; for either work or entertainment, “the next platform will be even more immersive; an embodied internet where you’re in the experience, not just looking at it”. For example, a work meeting- it’ll feel like you’re in the room together, having a shared sense of space and communicating via your avatar, not just looking at faces on a screen.

To access the Metaverse, you will need either a VR headset or AR glasses. With Apple rumoured to bring out AR glasses later this year, could these pieces become as common as a phone/ laptop??!!

Other benefit of the Metaverse include:

  1. Sustainability improving- by attending work/school/social events virtually, resources can be saved.
  2. Improve affordability of experiences- the Metaverse would allow individuals to virtually experience world ‘travel’ and enable interaction with family members despite their location.
  3. New opportunities- its thought that in future years, possibilities such as travelling to solar systems, or the centre of the earth will be possible through the metaverse.

Unlike the internet, no single company will own the metaverse; it will rely on a combination of organisations and developers to take part in building it. Despite this, Facebook is at the forefront of the contribution, by hiring 10,000 people and donating billions to lead the way in the Metaverse developments. For now, everything is still in the early stages and Facebook predict it will take another 10/15 years to complete.

So… what to do we think? A fad or a revolutionary development? Let us know your thoughts!
